Rug Construction & Care Guide

A quick reference on how to care for different types of rugs — so yours stays beautiful for years to come.

Hand-Knotted & Hand-Woven Rugs

Hand-knotted rugs are known for their durability and craftsmanship. The quality depends on knot density, materials, and construction. With proper care, these rugs can last for generations.

  • Do not vacuum the fringe. Turn off the vacuum beater bar to avoid damage.
  • Roll or fold for storage based on knot density. High-density rugs should be rolled.
  • If fringe is damaged, contact a professional rug repair service.

Hand-Tufted Rugs

Hand-tufted rugs are made using a tufting tool and finished with a canvas backing secured by latex. They are quicker to produce than hand-knotted rugs and are often more trend-focused.

  • Always vacuum with the beater bar turned off. For shag styles, beat the rug outdoors instead.
  • Exposure to moisture may accelerate latex breakdown. Clean spills quickly and dry thoroughly.
  • Store rolled only. Avoid folding or placing heavy objects on the rug while stored.
  • Fringe can often be reattached with simple sewing. Major repairs should be handled by a specialist.

Machine-Made Rugs

Machine-made rugs are power-loomed using automated equipment. They are produced quickly and often follow current design trends. Quality varies by fiber, density, and construction.

  • Turn off vacuum beater bars during cleaning to prevent damage.
  • Fringe is often sewn on and can come loose. Use caution while vacuuming.
  • Store rolled to avoid creases or foundation damage. Do not fold.
  • If serging or edges begin to fray, consult a repair professional.
